The general rule of thumb (and in some cases, the law) is that antique or vintage jewellery that has been restored or repaired must still be at least 50 per cent original in order to retain its label of ‘antique’ or ‘vintage’. While most modern jewellery is cast, antique jewellery is always hand made.

Modern jewellery is valued by how much the metal and gemstones are worth separately on the wholesale market.

Antique and vintage jewellery is worth more than the sum of its parts because each piece is unique.

In order to be fully insured, your jewellery needs to be listed separately on your home contents policy with a broker who offers a bespoke policy.
